Case Description

On April 16, 2022, in the occupied Melitopol, 55-year-old local resident Sergei Butnary was abducted. That day, Russian soldiers came to his apartment — there were seven of them, all in uniform, balaclavas and with machine guns. Conducted a search and took Sergey, he only asked to give the neighbors the dachshund Lola, who lives with him. He was allowed to do so, but after that they put a bag over his head, put him in a car and took him away in an unknown direction. Ukrainian Boris Kleshchev was abducted from his home in Melitopol on 29 April 2022. All gadgets and passports were taken from the house. After that, each of the two rooms in the apartment was searched. They did not let Khozhayev out of their sight, and Boris was not even allowed to smoke. For several days, Boris's relatives also knew nothing about him, they contacted all authorities, filed a missing person report, and then saw a propaganda video with accusations of working for the SBU. On May 15, 2022, a propaganda video appeared on one of the Russian channels, in which Sergey Butnar and four other Melitopol residents—the head of security at the Melitopol elevator Igor Artemenko, former border guard Vitaliy Gvozdienko, lawyer Oleg Zubov with his son Gleb, and the head of the Melitopol fire and rescue squad No. 10 Boris Kleshchev—were accused of involvement in subversive activities against the occupation regime. They were accused of espionage and sent to a pre-trial detention center. Relatives drew attention to the fact that Boris in the video has an unnatural posture - he is bent in three deaths, although he always stretched out like a string, rubbed his hands hard, and the thumb on one seemed to be knocked out, his temple and ear were swollen, a scratch on his nose, bruises under his eyes. On February 19, 2024, the Rostov Regional Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Sergey Butnary to 13 years, Oleg Zubov to 12 years, and Igor Artemenko to 11 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. There is no information about the sentences of Boris Kleshchev, Vitaly Gvozdenko, and Gleb Zubov. On October 2, 2025, Kleshchova was released during the next prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
