Case Description
In the occupied Melitopol of the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine, on January 9, 2023, Margarita Kharenko, an employee of the local Volunteer Service, was abducted from her own home." A search was conducted in her house and a tablet was taken away. Later, extremist materials" were allegedly found on the tablet: photographs of a blown-up car. At first, the girl was held in the Melitopol Penal Colony No. 144, then she was transported to the pre-trial detention center in the village of Akimovka. On January 12, 2023, weightlifter Sergey Avramenko was abducted from a house in Melitopol. For a long time, there was no information about his whereabouts or charges. On January 12, 2024, a criminal case against Harenko and Avramenko was filed with the Southern District Military Court. Margarita was accused of espionage, participation in an extremist and terrorist organization, and a terrorist act committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy. Sergei, according to the data in the case file, was accused of participating in a terrorist organization and a terrorist act committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy." According to the security forces' version, in 2022 Kharenko and Avramenko joined an organized group - a terrorist community - by communicating via messengers with unidentified employees of Ukrainian special services. As employees of a sports hall in Melitopol, Kharenko and Avramenko "carried out visual surveillance and collected information" about a certain gym visitor from May to December 2022. Believing the visitor to the hall to be a serviceman of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Harenko and Avramenko allegedly procured an explosive device, which they installed under the bottom of his car." "On December 23, 2022, unknown individuals "from among the participants of the terrorist community carried out the detonation of an explosive device, causing the victim serious bodily harm. In addition, the investigation claims that Kharenko in 2022 agreed to the proposal of an employee of the Security Service of Ukraine to be involved in confidential cooperation with foreign intelligence. On June 27, 28 and July 3, 2022, she allegedly conducted reconnaissance by visual observation and photographing of reliable information about the movement routes of units of the Russian Armed Forces." "In addition, from October 8, 2022, until her detention, Kharenko participated in the activities of the banned extremist public organization "SICH-S14. Law enforcement officers claim that Margarita Kharenko was detained on January 30, 2023. On April 3, 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Margarita Kharenko and Sergey Avramenko guilty and sentenced Kharenko to 20 years in a general regime penal colony, and Avramenko to 16 years in a strict regime penal colony, with the first 5 years to be served in prison.
