Case Description
In November 2023, in the village of Kurmanayevo, Republic of Bashkortostan, a search was conducted at the home of 33-year-old Rustam Fararetdinov, the stepbrother of Bashkir activist Ruslan Gabbasov. Nothing was seized from the house during the investigative actions. A criminal case was opened against Fararetdinov for aiding terrorist activity. The reason for the criminal prosecution was correspondence with his brother in WhatsApp: they discussed the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in which the Bashkirs are fighting. At the same time, Gabbasov himself emphasized that he has nothing to do with these formations. On November 24, the Kirovsky District Court of Ufa sent Fararetdinov to a pre-trial detention center. Gabbasov said that his brother was offered freedom if the activist returned to Russia. Gabbasov himself left Russia in early November 2021. In April 2022, it became known that the activist had received political asylum in Lithuania. On August 7, 2024, the Central Military District Court found Rustam Fararetdinov guilty and sentenced him to five and a half years of imprisonment in a general regime colony.
