Case Description
In December 2022, in Moscow, the administrator of the Telegram channel about criminology "Real Crime, the author of articles on criminology and profiling, anarchist and eco-activist Ruslan Ushakov was detained. He was accused of justifying terrorism and calling for extremism, spreading "fakes" about the Russian army and rehabilitating Nazism. The reason for the criminal prosecution was numerous publications (more than 170 texts) in the open community "Real Crime" about the shelling of Mariupol and the killings of peaceful Ukrainian citizens, as well as "calls for violence against Vladimir Putin. During the first interrogation, Ushakov was beaten and tortured, including with electric current, to force him to give incriminating testimony." On December 15, the Gagarin District Court of Moscow sent the activist to a pre-trial detention center. On June 29, 2023, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Ruslan Ushakov guilty and sentenced him to 8 years in prison. 27 October 2023, the Appellate Military Court reduced the sentence to 7 years and 10 months in a general regime colony.
