In March 2024, in the occupied Luhansk region, 46-year-old Roman Ponomarenko, a citizen of Ukraine and resident of Goncharovka village, was detained. He was accused of 'participating in a terrorist community' and 'undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities.'" The man was placed in custody. According to the Russian investigation, in July 2020, Ponomarenko signed a contract with the 46th separate special-purpose battalion "Donbass-Ukraine, underwent training at the "Desna" training center in the Chernihiv region, and from August 2020 to September 2021, he participated in combat operations on the territory of the former "Severodonetsk" airport, performing duties related to receiving the sick and wounded as a sanitary instructor. On March 19, 2024, FSB officers identified the fact of Ponomarenko's participation in the "Donbass" battalion and undergoing training, which he did not report to the authorities — "that is, he deliberately did not take advantage of the opportunity to be exempt from criminal liability." 2. On October 22, 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Roman Ponomarenko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
