Case Description
In Mariupol, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than the end of April 2022, 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen, senior sergeant of the Azov regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Roman Ataman fell into the hands of Russian soldiers. Against him, a criminal case was initiated for participating in the activities of a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. 22 September 2025, the Southern District Military Court found Roman Ataman guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime penal colony.
