Case Description
On May 16, 2025, Ramil Aliyev, a 45-year-old native of Azerbaijan, was detained in Voronezh. He was charged with glorifying Nazism by desecrating symbols of military glory and defiling the graves of the deceased.
According to investigators, on May 15, 2025, Aliyev, while heavily intoxicated, threw flowers and wreaths into the Eternal Flame at the “Monument to Glory” memorial complex, thereby extinguishing the flame. Investigators believe that by doing so, he desecrated the mass grave of Soviet soldiers. In addition, the prosecution alleges that in July 2025, the defendant committed shoplifting.
On May 19, 2025, the Kominternovsky District Court of Voronezh imposed house arrest as a pretrial restraint on the defendant. In July 2025, the court changed the pretrial measure to pretrial detention. Law enforcement officials justified the need for the arrest by citing the theft committed by the defendant, which was added to the charges.
On December 2, 2025, the Voronezh Regional Court found Ramil Aliyev guilty and sentenced him to 1 year, 7 months, and 10 days of imprisonment in a general-regime correctional colony.
On March 25, 2026, the First Court of Appeals of General Jurisdiction upheld the sentence.
