Case Description
In the town of Pestovo in the Novgorod region in January 2023, a local resident, a native of the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine, Petro Opalyuk, was detained. He was accused of "confidential cooperation" with another state. According to the investigation, Opalnik persuaded the mobilized 'to commit state treason by providing information to the enemy about the locations of Russian military units and formations, stealing and transferring military equipment, and voluntarily surrendering to captivity'. The court sent Opalnіk to a remand prison. According to the investigation, on November 11, from 18:00 to 18:10, the student conducted reconnaissance of the military enlistment office area with the aim of arson using a Molotov cocktail. This is the first known case of charges under Art. 352.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. On August 1, 2024, the Novgorod Regional Court found Pyotr Opalnik guilty and sentenced him to 8 years of imprisonment to be served in a general regime correctional colony with a restriction of freedom for 1 year and 6 months. January 13, 2025, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the sentence. In September 2025, it became known that Opalnitsa was stripped of her acquired Russian citizenship at the initiative of the FSB.
