Case Description
12 August 2024, two Ukrainian servicemen were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel in the Kursk region — Junior Sergeant Sergey Popovich of the 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade and soldier Pavel Stasyuk of the 82nd Separate Airborne Assault Brigade. They were accused of committing a terrorist attack as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in serious consequences. According to the Russian investigation, on the morning of August 12, 2024, Popovich and Stasiuk, as part of a group of Ukrainian servicemen, illegally crossed the Russian border in an armored vehicle and entered the village of Zhuravli in the Korenevsky district of the Kursk region." "There they equipped firing positions, mined the area, occupied private houses, opened fire on Russian military personnel and civilians, and also hindered the evacuation of the civilian population. On March 18, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Serhiy Popovych to 16 years in prison and Pavlo Stasyuk to 15 years. The first 3 years both must serve in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence - in a strict regime correctional colony. On July 28, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the verdict unchanged.
