Case Description
On October 23, 2023, in the city of Berdyansk in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region, Pavel Levchenko, a 40-year-old resident of Zaporizhzhia with forced Russian citizenship, was detained. It is claimed that at the time of his detention, he was attempting to retrieve from a cache 5 kg of plastic explosive C-4. A criminal case was opened against the Ukrainian citizen for treason, several episodes of terrorism and attempted terrorism, illegal manufacture and circulation of explosive devices, explosive devices, weapons and ammunition, as well as assistance in terrorist activities. According to the version of the Russian security forces, in April 2022, Levchenko was recruited by an employee of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine named "Ruslan Anatolyevich." After undergoing special training, in September 2022, at the direction of his curator, the defendant traveled to the Republic of Crimea for "settlement and execution of tasks for the Ukrainian special services." It is claimed that Levchenko was involved in the commission of three sabotage-terrorist acts on the territory of the peninsula - the explosion of a gas pipeline at the gas unit of the State Unitary Enterprise of the Republic of Crimea "KrymGazSety", the explosion of railway tracks during the passage of a freight train with lumber for the needs of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation 15 km from Feodosia, and the explosion of railway tracks during the passage of a freight train with firewood, coal, and empty boxes from under ammunition for the needs of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation 20 km from Feodosia. When committing the explosions, Levchenko allegedly used components of improvised explosive devices, which were handed over to him by his curator through caches in the Zaporizhzhia region, which he delivered to Crimea in his personal car. The court sent the man to a pre-trial detention center. On December 24, 2024, the Southern Military District Court found Pavel Levchenko guilty and sentenced him to 22 years of imprisonment, with the first 5 years to be served in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence in a strict regime correctional colony, as well as a fine of 1.5 million rubles. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
