Case Description
In the village of Magdagachi, Amur Oblast, in June 2023, a 47-year-old electric train driver, a native of Lviv, Ostap Demchuk, was detained. He was accused of treason. According to the investigation, between July 18, 2022, and January 9, 2023, Demchuk systematically transferred funds to the bank card of a Ukrainian citizen who was collecting funds for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for the purchase of weapons, repair of malfunctioning equipment, and the purchase of ammunition and military uniforms. The court sent the man to a pre-trial detention center. According to Demchuk's testimony, he himself was subjected to torture and abuse, his daughters were forced to have needles driven under their nails during interrogation, which caused health problems for them. On July 16, 2024, the Amur Regional Court found Ostap Demchuk guilty and sentenced him to 13 years in a strict regime colony with a 1.5-year restriction of freedom and a fine of 400 thousand. rubles. September 20, 2024, the Fifth Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the verdict. On December 26, 2024, Demchuk was stripped of Russian citizenship.
