Case Description
In Mariupol, in the occupied Donetsk region, in April 2022, a 38-year-old citizen of Ukraine, commander of a grenade launcher platoon section of the 36th Separate Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleg Polulyakhov, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against him for cruel treatment of the civilian population in the occupied territory, murder and attempted murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group, motivated by political and ideological hatred. According to the Russian investigation, from March to April 2022, Polulyakhov, while at a combat position located on the territory of a school in Mariupol, received a criminal order from his commander to kill peaceful civilians passing near the combat position." Following orders, Polulyakhov shot three city residents with an automatic rifle. As a result of the injuries received, one man died, and a woman and a man managed to survive. Also, on one of the days of the specified period, the accused entered the entrance of a multi-storey residential building on Ermak Street, where he discovered a civilian, after which he shot him in the head with an automatic weapon. As a result of the injury received, the man died on the spot. August 19, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk Republic found Oleg Polulyakhov guilty and sentenced him to 27 years in prison to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
