Case Description
Prior to May 2022, a 21-year-old Ukrainian citizen, serviceman of the Azov Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleg Marichanu, was captured by Russian servicemen in Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region. He was accused of cruel treatment of the civilian population during the war, robbery committed by a group, causing serious bodily harm and murder committed by a group, motivated by hatred, associated with robbery. According to the Russian investigation, in March 2022, a man, while on combat duty, carrying out an order from his superiors to confiscate cars from residents of the city of Mariupol and subsequently transfer them to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with his comrade, demanded that the owner of a parked car hand over the keys to them and, upon refusal, fired two shots into the owner's thigh. The car owner died at the scene from his injuries. On September 2, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Oleg Marichan guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
