Case Description
On March 13, 2025, during hostilities in the Kursk region, a 42-year-old Ukrainian citizen, senior soldier of the 95th separate airborne assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Nikolai Koval, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on March 2, 2025, Koval, as part of a unit in a Stryker armored personnel carrier, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation and invaded the Kursk region in the area of the Sudzhansky checkpoint. After that, he arrived in the area of the sloboda of Goncharovka in the Sudzhansky district and took an observation and fire position "with the aim of blocking and holding the settlement." On September 24, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Nikolai Kovaly guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison, the first 4 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
