Case Description

In Moscow on September 25, 2022, seven participants in the 'Mayakovsky Readings' who declared that day 'anti-mobilization' were detained under administrative articles. The organizers of the readings did this in protest against the 'partial' mobilization of Russians announced a few days earlier as part of the war against Ukraine. The next morning, security forces broke into the apartment where three activists were located: Alexander Menyukov, poet Artem Kamardin, and his girlfriend Alexandra Popova. Popova said that she and Kamardin were tortured. After the search, security forces published a video in which Kamardin, kneeling, apologized" for the couplet "Glory to Kievan Rus, Novorossiya - suck it", said during "Mayakovsky Readings. Doctors refused Kamardin hospitalization despite the fact that ambulance staff diagnosed him with a concussion, closed craniocerebral injury, chest bruise, and numerous facial abrasions. On the same day, it became known that criminal cases were opened against Kamardin and two other participants in the "anti-mobilization" readings—Nikolai Daineko and Yegor Shtovba—on charges of inciting hatred or enmity with a threat of violence. According to the investigation, they incited hatred against the 'volunteer armed formations of the LPR and DPR.' On September 28, the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow placed them in custody. In March 2023, Daineko, Shtovba, and Kamardina were charged with calls for anti-state activities. On May 10, 2023, the Tverskoi District Court of Moscow found Nikolai Daineko guilty and sentenced him to four years in a general regime colony. On July 5, 2023, the Moscow City Court upheld the sentence. July 5, 2023, the Moscow City Court upheld Daineko's sentence. On December 28, 2023, the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow also found Artemy Kamardin and Egor Shtovba guilty and sentenced them to seven and five and a half years in prison, respectively. October 3, 2024, the Moscow City Court upheld the sentences of Kamardin and Shtovba.
