Case Description
4 October 2024, in Kursk region, during combat operations, a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the 21st Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mykola Chovhan, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was initiated against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to Russian investigators, in September 2024, Chovhan, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle as part of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, illegally invaded the territory of the Russian Federation. Being in the Glukhovsky district of Kursk region, he "intimidated local residents, prevented their evacuation, repeatedly opened fire to kill Russian servicemen and civilians, and also participated in the illegal armed blockade of the village of Veseloye." On 6 May 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Mykola Chovhan guilty and sentenced him to 17 years' imprisonment, with the first 5 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
