Case Description
On January 7, 2025, in the Kursk region, during combat operations, 48-year-old Ukrainian citizen and Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman Nikolai Barabashchuk was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on January 4, 2025, Barabashchuk, armed with automatic weapons and ammunition, together with other servicemen of the same unit, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region and proceeded in the direction of s. Novoivanovka "in order to block and hold it under armed control. Upon arrival at the location, along with his comrades, he equipped and maintained an observation and fire position near the settlement, 'intimidated the peaceful population by using weapons, prohibited evacuation, participated in the disorganization of the activities of state authorities and local self-government, and observed the actions of Russian military personnel.'", 29 July 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Nikolai Barabaschuk guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison, with the first 3 years to be served in a prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
