Case Description
3 August 2023, 43-year-old Magadan native Nikolay Artamonov was detained at the railway station in Novorossiysk. A criminal case was opened against him on charges of calling for terrorism, repeated "discrediting" of the Russian army, and planning to participate in the activities of a terrorist organization. According to the version of the security forces, from May to July 2023, Artamonov published materials calling for terrorism. n the summer of 2023, he attempted to join the Legion "Freedom of Russia, an organization banned in Russia, and received instructions from his handlers for crossing the border to reach Ukraine via the Belgorod region, but was detained when trying to leave. The man was placed in a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation. September 23, 2025, the Southern Military Court found Nikolai Artamonov guilty and sentenced him to 9 years in a strict regime colony, 3 of which he must serve in prison."
