Case Description
On December 25, 2023, a court in Moscow arrested journalist Nika Novak on charges of 'cooperating with a foreign state on a confidential basis'. The details of the charges are unknown. On November 16, 2024, the Zabaykalsky Krai Court found Nika Novak guilty and sentenced the journalist to 4 years in a general regime colony. On March 31, 2025, the Fifth Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the sentence unchanged. The court also decided to confiscate 500 thousand rubles from Novak, which, according to the official version, were earned 'by criminal means' at the editorial office of Radio Svoboda. In addition, the department decided to recover from the journalist the costs of the arrival of prosecution witnesses to the courts, but the defense side appealed this decision and it was returned for reconsideration.
