Case Description
On February 9, 2024, in the Perm Territory, human rights defender and journalist Natalya Balyakina was detained. She left for the city of Tchaikovsky for a meeting and after that stopped contacting anyone. Security forces conducted a search at her daughters' homes in Perm and Chaykovsk. A criminal case was opened against Balyakina for extortion from the chairman of the Tchaikovsky City Duma, Mikhail Shubin. According to the investigation, she demanded 500 thousand from him. 5. rubles, in return allegedly offering not to publish some 'interesting' information about his private life. Prior to the election of a preventive measure, the human rights defender was placed in a temporary detention center, but on February 10, she was transferred to the hospital due to her health condition. On the same day, the court extended the consideration of the investigator's petition for arrest by 72 hours, and on February 13, it granted it: the Chaikovsky District Court of the Perm Territory sent a 62-year-old woman to a pre-trial detention center. On May 8, 2024, the measure of restraint for the human rights defender was changed to house arrest. On June 6, 2024, the measure of restraint for the human rights defender was again mitigated - to a ban on certain actions. On April 10, 2025, the human rights activist passed away. The cause of death is not named.
