Case Description
2024 in the Kursk region during hostilities, a 43-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a soldier of the 241st Territorial Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mikhail Pogorely, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in October 2024, Pogorely, as part of a military unit, repeatedly crossed the state border of Russia in the Sudzhansky district. To block and maintain control over the settlement of Guevo, he "equipped observation and fire positions, tracked the movement of Russian military personnel, and also intimidated civilians by using weapons and prevented their evacuation." On October 6, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Mikhail Pogorely guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison, the first 4 years to be served in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
