Case Description
On March 7, 2025, in the Kursk region, during combat operations, a 38-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the 17th separate tank brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Mikhail Gorvat, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on February 13, 2025, Gorvat, in an armored vehicle with an AK-74 assault rifle and grenades, as part of a unit, invaded the territory of the Kursk region. There, under the threat of using weapons, he prevented the evacuation of civilians, fired at Russian military personnel and local residents, and also participated in blocking and holding the village of Viktorovka. On August 14, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Mikhail Gorvat guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison, with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
