Case Description
In May 2024, during the battles for Azovstal in occupied Mariupol, Donetsk region, 23-year-old Ukrainian citizen and Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman Mark Lishchinsky was taken prisoner by Russian military forces. He was subsequently accused of participating in the activities of a terrorist organization and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The details of the accusation are unknown, but are most likely related to his service as a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman in the Azov regiment. On November 12, 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Mark Lishchinsky guilty and sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. On July 4, 2025, Mark Lishchinsky was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
