Case Description
In late August 2023, the Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case about 'fakes' about the Russian army motivated by political hatred against journalist Maria Gessen. The reason for the criminal case was Gessen's interview with Yuri Dud. Journalists talked, among other things, about the war crimes of the Russian army in Bucha. Basmanny District Court of Moscow issued an in absentia arrest warrant for Gessen on December 25, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs put her on the international wanted list. Gessen lives in the USA. July 15, 2024, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow found Maria Gessen guilty and sentenced her in absentia to eight years in a general regime colony. The court also prohibited Gessen from administering websites on the internet for 4 years. October 30, 2024, the Moscow City Court upheld the sentence.
