Case Description

Marina Ovsyannikova was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army out of political hatred. The reason for the criminal case was a picket that she held in July 2022. Then Ovsyannikova went out to the Sofia Embankment opposite the Kremlin with a poster that had photographs of children who died in Ukraine and an inscription in which the Russian president was called a "murderer." "352 children died. How many more children must die before you stop?" - was written on the poster. As the prosecution believes, with these actions Ovsyannikova "created a real threat of forming a negative attitude" in society toward the Russian armed forces. Ovsiannikova was detained and placed under house arrest, but soon she left Russia with her daughter. On October 4, 2023, the Basmanny Court of Moscow sentenced Marina Ovsyannikova in absentia to 8 years and 6 months in prison. Ovsyannikova did not admit her guilt and stated that she does not renounce a single word of hers. On March 28, 2024, the Moscow City Court left the verdict in force.
