Case Description
In Ukraine, in Mariupol on May 20, 2022, while carrying out an order from the President of Ukraine to leave 'Azovstal', a 20-year-old forced migrant from Abkhazia, a shooter from a military unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mamuka Gatsareliya, was taken prisoner." "For almost two years, nothing was known about his fate, and only on February 19, 2024, the young man called his mother and reported about his captivity, as well as about the criminal sentence. His mother claims that after being taken prisoner, he was tortured and beaten. A criminal case was opened against Gatsarelia for "participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict" and "attempt on the life of a military serviceman with the aim of obstructing the lawful activities of the said person to ensure public safety. According to Russian investigators, Gatseralia traveled to Ukrainian territory in March 2022, signed a contract with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, underwent training, and was sent to Mariupol. On April 1, 2022, from a combat position in an apartment of a multi-story building, he opened fire on four Russian soldiers, three of whom did not survive. Two weeks later, at another combat position, Gatsarelia threw two grenades into a group of servicemen of the Armed Forces (AF) of Russia. February 19, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk Republic found Mamuka Gatsarelia guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
