According to Russian investigators, Gatseralia traveled to Ukrainian territory in March 2022, signed a contract with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, underwent training, and was sent to Mariupol. On April 1, 2022, from a combat position in an apartment of a multi-story building, he opened fire on four Russian soldiers, three of whom did not survive. Two weeks later, at another combat position, Gatsarelia threw two grenades into a group of servicemen of the Armed Forces (AF) of Russia. February 19, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk Republic found Mamuka Gatsarelia guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
