Case Description
On May 2, 2025, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, Ukrainian citizens, soldiers of the 21st Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 45-year-old Alexander Brodovoy and 33-year-old Maxim Onishchenko, were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Criminal charges were brought against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in April 2025, Brodovaya and Onishchenko, along with other servicemen of their unit, illegally crossed the Russian border on an infantry fighting vehicle and invaded the territory of Belovsky District in the Kursk Region." There they "blocked and held the Kuchurov farm under armed control. Within a few days, from their equipped positions, they opposed Russian servicemen and also intimidated civilians. On November 19, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced both to 16 years in prison, Alexander Brodsky must serve the first 4 years in prison and Maxim Onishchenko—the first 3 years in prison, the rest of the term in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
