Case Description
On September 21, 2024, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, a 36-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a soldier of military unit A-4941 of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, soldier Maksim Benzenko, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on September 14, 2024, during the storming of the village of Grodovka by Russian troops, the commander gave Benzenko an order to kill a civilian in whose house they were located. The reason was the fear that the man could give away their positions, as well as his support for Russia. Benzenko, experiencing hatred towards the man, shot him three times with an automatic weapon. On 11 November 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Maksim Benzenko guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in prison with serving the sentence in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
