Case Description
On April 11, 2022, in Mariupol, occupied Donetsk region, 44-year-old Ukrainian citizen Leonid Onupko, commander of the 2nd company of the 501st separate battalion of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was taken prisoner by Russian military. A criminal case was opened against him for the murder of two or more persons committed by a group of persons on the grounds of political or ideological hatred, as well as for cruel treatment of the civilian population and the use of prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict. According to the Russian security forces, in the period from March to April 2022, Onupko, being in Mariupol, gave his subordinates 'knowingly criminal orders to kill civilians found near the combat positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine'. It is alleged that as a result, Ukrainian servicemen shot and killed ten civilians who did not pose any threat and did not participate in the armed conflict. On October 16, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Leonid Onupko guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment with serving in a correctional colony of a special regime. It is unknown whether the verdict will be appealed. Later, two more criminal cases were opened against Onupko for murders and cruel treatment of the civilian population during the war. According to the Russian investigation, on March 14, 2022, Onupko gave an order to kill a civilian man. The Ukrainian serviceman himself claimed that he was in a state of affect because his subordinates came under fire, five servicemen were wounded and one was killed. September 30, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Leonid Onupko guilty and sentenced him to a second life sentence to be served in a strict regime colony. December 12, 2024, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the sentence unchanged. 1 April 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Leonid Onupko guilty in the third criminal case, the size of the punishment is unknown.
