Case Description
On the morning of May 16, 2023, a clergyman of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC MP) Konstantin Maksimov left the occupied Tokmak of the Zaporozhye region with a volunteer humanitarian mission through Crimea. At 10:27 he drove up to the checkpoint, probably in Chongar. There has been no contact with him since then. Apparently, the clergyman was removed from the flight and detained by Russian military personnel, and then taken to a filtration camp in Dzhankoy. Later, a criminal case was opened against Maksimov for espionage. According to the version of the Russian security forces, the priest, acting against the security of the Russian Federation, from April 2022 to February 2023, collected information with coordinates of the deployment of Russian air defense technical means located in the city and district. He passed the data to an employee of the Ukrainian Security Service via an internet messenger. No later than August 2, 2024, the Zaporizhzhia Regional Court found Konstantin Maksimov guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in prison to be served in a strict regime penal colony. There is no information about appealing the verdict.
