Case Description
In the Kursk region in 2024, during hostilities, Ukrainian citizens, soldiers of the 2nd and 5th mechanized battalions of the 17th separate tank brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces, 35-year-old Ivan Zolotaryov and 42-year-old Maksim Vaskovsky, were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Criminal charges were brought against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on the night of August 31, 2024, Zolotaryov, as part of a platoon, invaded the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region in a cargo truck. In the village of Tolsty Lug, they equipped an observation and fire position in the basement of a private house, from where they monitored the movement of Russian military units and intimidated civilians." "On September 4, 2024, Vaskovsky joined them with his colleagues to reinforce." Two days later, a group of five people, including Zolotaryov and Vaskovsky, moved to the village of Vishnevka in the Korenevsky district, where they continued the same activity. While in the villages, they "illegally occupied private homes, interfered with the evacuation of civilians, and repeatedly opened fire on Russian servicemen and the civilian population." On March 28, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Ivan Zolotarev to 17 years in prison, Maksim Vaskovsky - to 16 years and 6 months in prison. Both must serve the first 5 years in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence - in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
