Case Description
On the evening of November 1, 2024, in the Kursk region, during combat operations, 33-year-old Ukrainian citizen and soldier of the 95th separate airborne assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ivan Sova, was taken prisoner by Russian military forces. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on October 15, 2024, Sova, armed with automatic weapons and ammunition, as part of a unit in an armored vehicle 'Rochelle Senator', illegally invaded the Kursk region. On the outskirts of the village of Pogrebki in the Sudzhansky district, he took up observation and fire positions and for two weeks "blocked the settlement, prevented the evacuation of the civilian population and intimidated local residents, including by firing weapons." 10 June 2025, the 2nd Western Military Circuit Court found Ivan Sov guilty and sentenced him to 15 years of imprisonment, the first 3 years to be served in prison, the rest - in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
