Case Description
On May 15, 2025, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, a 34-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a soldier of the 95th separate assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ivan Sharutin, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in May 2025, Sharutin, together with his colleagues, on the infantry fighting vehicle 'Bradley' illegally crossed the state border and invaded Russian territory. While near the khutor of Oleshnya in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, he and his fellow servicemen fired at civilian infrastructure objects and peaceful population, creating a danger of death for people and hindering their evacuation. On November 18, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Ivan Sharutin guilty and sentenced him to 15 years of imprisonment, the first 4 years of which he must serve in prison, and the remaining part in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
