Case Description
Late in the evening of June 27, 2023, in the village of Dubovoye, Belgorod region, 28-year-old tractor driver Ivan Fokina was detained near a dormitory. That evening, Fokin got very drunk and was in a state of emotional distress due to his father, who had health problems. Left keys at work, started knocking on doors, but got the wrong house. The residents called the police, which detained Fokina. During the detention, the police illegally took his phone and demanded his password, which Fokhin gave. In the phone, security forces found YouTube subscriptions to Ukrainian bloggers, a Telegram subscription to the "Freedom of Russia" Legion. Fokina was taken for a medical examination and then placed in a temporary detention facility. On June 28, the court sentenced the tractor driver to administrative arrest for 7 days under the article on 'appearing in public places in a state of intoxication'. While serving his administrative arrest in a temporary detention center, Fokina was visited by FSB operatives, beaten, subjected to electric shock, and forced to give incriminating testimony. According to Fokina, they pulled a bag over his head, 'wet their hands with something and gave him something to hold.' Against Fokina, a criminal case was opened for illegal possession of ammunition and explosives - during a search, he allegedly found one 7.62 caliber cartridge and an F-1 grenade with a detonator. On October 4, 2023, security forces opened two more criminal cases against Fokina — for attempted state treason and attempted participation in a terrorist organization. According to the investigation, on the day he was detained, Ivan was planning to cross the border with Ukraine and start fighting as part of the "Freedom of Russia" legion. The FSB also charged Fokina with possession of drugs without intent to sell and illegal cultivation of plants containing narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances." On March 29, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Ivan Fokina guilty and sentenced him to nine years in prison. Alexander Fokina must spend the first two years in prison, the remaining years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
