Case Description
In the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, a 23-year-old Ukrainian serviceman, a native of Boryspil, Ivan Chernenko, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. Later, he was accused of "participating in a terrorist community" and "training for terrorist activities." "According to Russian security forces, in 2020, Chernenko voluntarily signed a contract for military service in the "Ukrainian nationalist paramilitary organization 'Azov', after which he was sent to a training center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Using the skills he acquired at the Ukrainian Armed Forces center, Chernenko "until May 2022 took direct part in combat operations as part of the said illegal armed formation on the territory of the DNR, and his "criminal activities were thwarted by servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces. On July 22, 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Ivan Chernenko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and came into force. In July 2025, Chernenko was released as part of another prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
