Case Description
Unknown individuals in Poland on May 9, 2022, shouted 'fascists' and splashed red paint on Russian Ambassador Sergey Andreev during a solemn ceremony at the Soviet military cemetery in Warsaw. The crowd did not allow Andreyev to lay a wreath at the memorial cemetery. The St. George ribbon and glasses were torn off him, with insults being shouted." Andreev was forced to leave under police escort. The Investigative Committee of Russia, as a result of those events, opened a criminal case on an attack on a person enjoying international protection, with the aim of provoking a war. By March 2024 at the latest, Ukrainian citizen and journalist Irina Zemlyanu was charged in absentia with the attack on Andreyev. Later, the journalist was charged in absentia with inciting hatred and enmity on the basis of nationality by an organized group with the use of violence, as well as spreading "fakes" about the Russian army motivated by political hatred. According to the Russian investigation, in May 2022 and March 2024, Zemlyana posted publications on social networks containing false information about the commission of war crimes by Russian military personnel during the special operation. On March 4, 2024, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow issued a warrant for the arrest of a Ukrainian woman in absentia. In November 2024, she was put on the wanted list.
