Case Description

In Novosibirsk in March 2022, a criminal case was opened for 'fakes' about the Russian army against school psychologist, activist, and member of the 'Teachers' Alliance,' Irina Tolmacheva. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a comment from March 3, 2022 (the day before the law on "fakes" about the Russian army came into force) on Instagram on the page of Novosibirsk City Council deputy Sergei Boyko that the Ministry of Defense does not recognize all the deaths of Russian military personnel. As a measure of restraint for the duration of the investigation, she was given a written undertaking not to leave. 6 July 2023, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Novosibirsk found Irina Tolmacheva guilty and sentenced her to nine months of corrective labour with a 10% deduction from her wages to the state. October 9, 2023, the Novosibirsk Regional Court upheld the verdict. On March 13, 2024, it became known that the Oktyabrsky District Court of Novosibirsk granted the defense's petition and released Tolmacheva from punishment due to illness. In August 2024, Irina Tolmacheva left Russia.
