On November 8, 2024, in the area of the village of Shakhtarskoye in the Velikonovoselkovskoye district of the Donetsk region, Igor Varchuk, a citizen of Ukraine and a serviceman of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, fell into the hands of Russian soldiers. Later, a criminal case was opened against him on charges of participating in the activities of a terrorist organization and assisting terrorist activities. According to the Russian investigation, on September 22, 2024, Varchuk voluntarily took the oath at a training ground located in the area of the village of Orlovschina in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine and joined the 48th Separate Assault Battalion "Crimean Tatar Volunteer Battalion named after Noman Chelebidzhikhan, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. As of October 21, 2024, the Ukrainian citizen underwent training in tactical and special, shooting, combat, medical, physical and psychological training, after which he was provided with uniforms, weapons, ammunition, and other equipment for participation in hostilities as part of a battalion. From October 25 to November 8, 2024, Varchuk, performing the duties of a shooter, as part of the 48th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, took part in hostilities in the territory of Velikonovoselkovsky municipal district of the Donetsk People's Republic in the areas of the villages of Karl Marx and Shakhtorskoye. 22 May 2025, the Southern Military Court found Igor Varchuk guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime penal colony, with the first 3 years to be served in prison. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
