Case Description
In the occupied Donetsk region in 2022, five Ukrainian citizens were taken prisoner by Russian military forces - Dmitry Reyvah, Gleb Petruk, Yuri Makarenko, Ivan Bezlepkin, and Vladimir Puzanov. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against them for participation in a terrorist community. According to the Russian investigation, from February to March 2022, Ukrainians as part of the 46th separate assault battalion "Donbas-Ukraine" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine "took direct part in active hostilities using firearms, armored vehicles, missile and artillery systems, mortars and other indiscriminate munitions." "They fired from the village of Stepnoye in Volnovakha district and Volnovakha towards the positions of servicemen of the People's Militia of the DPR, as well as 'shelled the civilian population.'", On February 11, 2025, the Southern Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Yuri Makarenko and Vladimir Puzanov to 5 years and 8 months of imprisonment, Ivan Bezlepkin to 5 years and 10 months of imprisonment, Dmitry Reyvaakh and Gleb Petruk to 6 years of imprisonment with serving the sentence in a general regime correctional colony. On July 9, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
