Case Description
In Mariupol, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, during the defense of the Azovstal plant, 23-year-old serviceman of the special purpose unit "Azov" of the 12th operational purpose brigade of the eastern territorial association of the National Guard of Ukraine (military unit 3057) Yevhen Vintovkin was taken prisoner by Russian military. He was accused of murder committed by an organized group on grounds of political and ideological hatred, as well as of cruel treatment of the civilian population. According to the Russian investigation, on the morning of March 13, 2022, in Mariupol, Vintovkin and his fellow serviceman saw a civilian who was not participating in the armed conflict. Assuming that the man held a pro-Russian position, the defendant deliberately shot him with an AK-47 assault rifle. The victim died at the scene from his injuries. On October 14, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Yevgeny Vintovkin guilty and sentenced him to 22 years in a strict regime correctional colony. On December 25, 2025, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the sentence unchanged.
