Case Description
Evgeny Kazantsev, a local resident, was detained in St. Petersburg in March 2022. He was accused of participating in the activities of an extremist organization and a foreign armed formation, as well as illegally acquiring and carrying firearms. According to the investigation, Kazantsev "was a member of the militarized cell of the Right Sector. The court sent him to a pre-trial detention center. On November 28, 2023, the Leninsky District Court of Kursk found Yevgeny Kazantsev guilty and sentenced him to 12 years in a strict regime colony. The first three years, Kazantsev will spend in prison, and the remaining part - in a strict regime penal colony, with a restriction of freedom for 1 year 6 months. On March 19, 2019, the Kursk Regional Court finally sentenced him to 11 years and 11 months in prison." During the appellate court hearing, Kazantsev claimed that he went to Ukraine to care for a sick relative, lived peacefully, engaged in humanitarian aid (collecting and delivering), and was mobilized under Ukrainian law.
