Case Description

The Investigative Committee of Russia in March 2022 opened a criminal case against the official representative of 'Meta Platforms Inc' (Facebook), US citizen Andy Stone. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a tweet from March 11, 2022, in which Stone spoke about Meta's decision not to block users calling for the 'death of Russian invaders' and Vladimir Putin. According to the security forces, Stone lifted the ban on calls for violence against Russian military personnel in Meta social networks. He was charged in absentia with aiding terrorist activities, public calls for terrorist activities, public justification of terrorism, and public calls for extremist activities. On February 12, 2024, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow chose to detain Stone Andy Mark. The term is calculated from the moment of his extradition to the territory of the Russian Federation, or from the moment of his detention on the territory of the Russian Federation. Stone has been placed on the federal and international wanted list. Later, the charges were reclassified: the investigation limited itself to accusing her of justifying terrorism, excluding the charges of calling for extremism and assisting terrorist activities. On April 22, 2024, Judge Roman Kiforenko of the 2nd Western District Military Court found Andy Stone guilty and sentenced him to 6 years in a general regime colony. The court also prohibited Stone from moderating websites on the internet for 4 years after serving his sentence. On July 22, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
