Case Description
In the summer of 2023, the Dorogomilovsky Interdistrict Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee's Directorate in Moscow opened a criminal case for "fakes" about the Russian army against Ekaterina Fomina, a former correspondent for "Important Stories," and Roman Anin, the editor-in-chief of the online publication "Important Stories." The reason for the criminal prosecution was Fomina's investigation "The Commander Gave the Order: 'Let's Waste Them'," which tells how servicemen of the 4th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces executed peaceful residents of the village of Andreyevka in the Kyiv region. One of the soldiers, Daniil Frolkin, confessed to the murder in a conversation with Fomina. In August 2022, the video with the confession was published on the "Important Stories" YouTube channel. After this, Frolkin was given 5.5 years of probation under the article on "military fakes." Anin and Fomina are not in Russia. They were put on the wanted list. On June 17, 2024, the Dorogomilovsky District Court of Moscow issued an order for the in absentia arrest of both journalists. On March 31, 2025, the Dorogomilovsky District Court of Moscow found Roman Anin and Ekaterina Fomina guilty and sentenced both to 8.5 years of imprisonment in a general regime colony in absentia. The court also banned Fomina from administering websites and blogs for 3 years.
