Case Description
In Buryatia, a criminal case was opened for preparation for treason and participation in the activities of a terrorist organization against local resident Dmitry Zimin. The date of his detention is unknown. It is claimed that Zimin planned to reach the Bryansk region, cross the border with Ukraine and begin participating in combat operations against Russia. Law enforcement officers detained him allegedly during his preparation for departure. According to the investigation, Zimin shared the ideology of the 'Freedom of Russia' legion and intended to join it. Then, according to the investigation, the resident of Buryatia entered into correspondence with a representative of this organization. On his orders, he photographed cell towers in the village of Selenginsk, sent photos and coordinates of objects to the curator. After that, he obtained a foreign passport, purchased equipment, medicines, knives, and a train ticket to Moscow. The man was placed in custody for the duration of the investigation. On November 6, 2024, the 2nd Eastern Military District Court found Dmitry Zimin guilty and sentenced him to 8 years in prison, with the first 2 years to be served in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime correctional colony with a 1-year restriction of freedom. The verdict was not appealed and came into force. In June 2025, it became known that another criminal case was opened against Zimin, who is serving his sentence in a prison in Yeniseisk, for public calls for terrorism. The man was taken out of the prison to the pre-trial detention center in Ulan-Ude for the duration of the investigative actions. According to the investigation, while in the pre-trial detention center, Zimin publicly made statements containing a positive assessment of the activities of a certain organization recognized as terrorist in Russia. July 4, 2025, the 2nd Eastern Military District Court found Dmitry Zimin guilty and, taking into account the previous sentence, sentenced him to a final punishment of 8 years 6 months in a strict regime penal colony with a 1-year restriction of freedom. October 23, 2025 the Military Appellate Court changed the sentence, details are unknown.
