Case Description
On 19 October 2024, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, 45-year-old Ukrainian citizen, platoon commander of the 21st Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Senior Lieutenant Dmitry Yaremov, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in October 2024, Yaremov, armed with an assault rifle, as part of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, illegally invaded the territory of the Russian Federation. While in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region, Yaremov "intimidated local residents, prevented their evacuation, repeatedly opened fire to kill Russian military personnel and civilians, and also participated in the illegal armed blockade of the settlement of Novy Put. 15 May 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Dmitry Yaremov guilty and sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, with the first 5 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
