Case Description
In the Kursk region on December 8, 2024, during hostilities, a 44-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a serviceman of military unit A-0453 (225th assault battalion of the 115th separate mechanized brigade) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Dmitry Verbitsky, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on December 1, 2024, Verbitsky, being a contract soldier of the Ukrainian 225th Assault Battalion, illegally invaded Russian territory. Having with him machine guns and grenades, he took up a firing position near the village of Darino in the Sudzhansky district. According to the charge, he "participated in the armed seizure of a populated area, hindered the evacuation of local residents, as well as the activities of state authorities and local self-government bodies." 11 July 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Dmitry Verbitsky guilty and sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, with the first 3 years to be served in prison and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
