Case Description
On August 16, 2024, in Kursk, 51-year-old local resident, scientist, former associate professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Southwest State University (SWSU) Dmitry Skopin was detained. He was accused of publicly justifying terrorism on the internet. According to the investigation, on August 12, 2024, in one of the Telegram channels, Skopin "justified the invasion and actions of the AFU militants in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. For the duration of the investigation, the court chose a preventive measure for the defendant in the form of a ban on certain actions. On September 5, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Dmitry Skopinin guilty and sentenced him to 3 years in a general regime penal colony. The court also imposed a 2-year ban on the scientist administering websites and ordered the destruction of the SIM card seized from him, as well as the confiscation of a mobile phone that became material evidence in the criminal case. The man was taken into custody in the courtroom.
