Born in Dushanbe, as a child, he moved to Cherkasy with his parents, and in 2008-2009 he served his mandatory military service in Ukraine. He worked as an auto mechanic and operator in a call center, tried to start a small business. In 2017, he signed a contract with the National Guard to avoid mobilization, and at the departmental training center he studied to become an "informatics specialist, system administrator. Later he transferred to "Azov" and served there in the positions of senior machine gunner and grenade launcher, but in reality he "dealt with personnel" in the company - he kept records of "who is on vacation, who is on sick leave, who is on drill training", processed business trips, performed "clerical work. Diagnosed with hepatitis C, he began to experience heart pains in custody.

Case Description
In Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, a 31-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a soldier of the Azov regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Dmitry Shanayev, fell into captivity with Russian soldiers. Against him, a criminal case was initiated for participating in the activities of a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. On July 1, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Dmitry Shanayev guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime colony. December 3, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
