Case Description
18 May 2022, in the occupied Donetsk region, 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen and soldier of the Azov Special Operations Detachment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Dmytro Samchenko, was taken prisoner by Russian military forces. No later than August 2024, a criminal case was opened against him for participation in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. On 3 December 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Dmytro Savchenko guilty and sentenced him to 18.5 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony. The sentence was not appealed and entered into legal force. On 4 July 2025, Dmytro Samchenko was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
