Case Description
On September 19, 2025, in the Kursk region, Ukrainian citizens, servicemen of the 11th separate battalion of the 22nd separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmitry Pilay and Alexander Sereda, fell into captivity to Russian servicemen. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against them for committing terrorist acts as part of a group of persons, by prior conspiracy. According to the version of Russian law enforcement agencies, on August 8, 2024, Pilyay and Seresa, having with them AK-74 assault rifles, hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers of foreign manufacture RPG-7 and explosive devices, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation. While in the Korenevsky district of the Kursk region, the Ukrainians "carried out intimidation and threats against the local population, occupied private houses with the threat of using weapons, prohibited the movement of civilians, and repeatedly opened fire on Russian military personnel and civilians." "On February 11, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Dmitry Pilay to 15 years of imprisonment with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the rest in a strict regime penal colony, and Alexander Sereda to 16 years with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the rest in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
